What Are Tooth Gems?

A Cosmetic Addition. No Alteration to Your Tooth. Tooth gems, also called tooth jewels, are small decorative crystals or gems bonded to the surface of a tooth using a dental adhesive. The procedure involves no drilling, no removal of tooth enamel, and no permanent alteration to the tooth structure. The gem sits on the surface, adds a subtle decorative detail to the smile, and is removed cleanly whenever desired, leaving the tooth entirely unchanged.
At Halo 32, tooth gems are applied using the same bonding materials and sterile protocols used for clinical dental procedures. The surface is prepared carefully, the gem is placed precisely, and the bond is cured to the same standard as any other adhesive procedure at the clinic. The result is a gem that stays securely in place during normal eating, drinking, and oral hygiene, and is removed cleanly when you are ready for a change.

Who Should Consider Tooth Gems?

For Anyone Who Wants to Add Something to Their Smile.

Tooth gems are appropriate for any patient with healthy teeth who wants a decorative addition to their smile. A few things to be aware of before proceeding:

  • The tooth receiving the gem should be in good health, no active decay, no cracks, and healthy surrounding gum tissue
  • Gems are most commonly placed on the upper front teeth, where they are visible when smiling
  • The gem area requires slightly more careful cleaning during wear, food and plaque can accumulate around the edges
  • Gems are not recommended directly over existing restorations such as veneers or crowns, where the bonding surface may behave differently
  • They are temporary, though they can remain in place for months with proper care

Your dentist will assess the health of the intended tooth before placement and confirm suitability. If any treatment is needed on the tooth first, this will be discussed before the gem is applied.

THE HALO 32 PROCESS

Your Tooth Gem Appointment at Halo 32

01

Assessment

The tooth is assessed for health and suitability. The desired placement position is discussed and confirmed with you before any preparation begins.

02

Surface Preparation

The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly etched with a mild dental acid, the same preparation used for bonding procedures, to improve adhesion. The area is dried carefully. No enamel is removed.

03

Gem Placement & Bonding

A small amount of dental bonding adhesive is applied to the gem and the tooth surface. The gem is positioned precisely and pressed into place. The adhesive is cured with a dental light, creating a secure bond. The entire procedure takes approximately twenty to thirty minutes.

04

Care Guidance

Before you leave, guidance is provided on caring for the gem, how to clean around it, what to avoid in the first 24 hours, and what to do if it comes loose. The gem is removed at Halo 32 whenever you are ready, cleanly, without damage to the tooth surface.

What Tooth Gems Do for You

Placed in a Sterile Clinical Environment

Tooth gems applied outside a clinical setting, at beauty salons or pop-up services, carry real risks: non-dental adhesives that are difficult to remove without damaging enamel, gems placed over unhealthy tooth surfaces, and no clinical assessment of suitability. At Halo 32, the procedure is performed by trained dental clinicians using dental-grade materials in a sterile environment.

A Decorative Addition With No Permanent Commitment

Unlike many cosmetic dental procedures, tooth gems require no irreversible preparation of the tooth surface. The enamel is unchanged before and after, the gem adds to the tooth's surface temporarily and is removed without trace when desired.

Secure During Normal Activity

A properly bonded tooth gem placed with dental adhesive remains secure during normal eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Avoiding excessively hard or very sticky foods on the gem area during the first 24 hours allows the bond to fully cure, after which normal habits resume.

Removable at Any Time

When you are ready for the gem to be removed, or if you want to change its position, it is taken off cleanly at Halo 32 using standard dental instruments. The tooth surface is polished and left exactly as it was before the gem was placed.

What to Expect

A Short Appointment. An Immediate Result.

  • Appointment Duration: Approximately 20–30 minutes from assessment to completion.
  • First 24 Hours: Avoid very hard, crunchy, or sticky foods directly on the gem area while the bond fully cures.
  • Cleaning: Brush gently around the gem; do not scrub directly on it with a hard-bristled brush. A soft brush maintained at the normal angle keeps the area clean without dislodging the gem.
  • Longevity: With proper care, a tooth gem can remain securely in place for several months. It may dislodge if subjected to sustained force, such as biting hard foods directly on the gem area, for example.
  • Removal: Carried out at Halo 32 at any time. The tooth surface is polished clean after removal.

Why Halo 32 for Tooth Gems

Clinical Assessment Before Application

At Halo 32, a tooth gem is placed only on a tooth that has been assessed as healthy and suitable. An unhealthy tooth surface, one with early decay, cracks, or compromised enamel, is not an appropriate surface for bonding, regardless of the procedure. We assess before we proceed.

Dental-Grade Materials Throughout

The bonding adhesive and curing process used at Halo 32 for tooth gem application are the same materials and protocols used for clinical dental bonding. The gem bonds reliably and is removed cleanly, without the enamel damage that non-dental adhesives can cause.

Applied by Trained Clinicians

Tooth gem application at Halo 32 is performed by dental clinicians, not beauty technicians. The surface preparation, adhesive application, gem placement, and bond curing all benefit from the clinical skill and precision that the Halo 32 team applies to every procedure.

FAQs

Will the tooth gem damage my enamel?

No, provided it is applied and removed using proper dental materials and technique. The bonding procedure uses the same light acid etch used in standard dental bonding, which creates microscopic surface irregularities for adhesion without removing enamel. Removal is performed with dental instruments that take the gem and adhesive off cleanly. Tooth gems applied or removed using non-dental materials or by non-clinicians carry a higher risk of enamel damage.

With proper care, a tooth gem typically remains securely in place for several months. The bond may weaken over time with normal wear, or may dislodge if subjected to hard or sticky foods directly on the gem area. If the gem comes loose before you are ready to remove it, contact us; do not attempt to rebond it yourself.

We do not recommend placing gems directly on veneer surfaces. The porcelain or composite material of a veneer bonds differently from natural enamel, and the removal process may affect the veneer surface. If you have veneers and want a tooth gem, discuss this at your consultation; we will advise on the most appropriate option.

Keep the gem safely if possible and contact us. Do not attempt to reattach it yourself; household adhesives are not suitable for oral use and can cause significant damage to the tooth surface. We can reapply the gem at a short follow-up appointment.

Tooth gems are generally not recommended for children or young teenagers whose teeth are still developing. The enamel of recently erupted teeth is still maturing, and the bonding procedure is better suited to fully developed adult teeth. For teenagers approaching adulthood, we assess on a case-by-case basis.
